Building a positive relationship with students will increase their academic self-esteem. Teachers and students start developing a relationship immediately upon meeting each other. Some of these relationships blossom and some deteriorate. When a positive relationship does not develop between students and teachers, students often accuse the teachers of not liking them. Feeling rejected, some students misbehave and refuse to participate in learning activities. Teachers, feeling the pressure to keep control of the class, and the need to teach the subject matter, sometimes exclude the students from the class or refer them to the principal for discipline. This can cause a power struggle between students and teachers, decreasing the possibility that a positive relationship will develop.  In these cases, academic self-esteem is negatively affected, and these students become less willing to learn from the teacher.
